Sofia welcomes the 41st annual Sofia Music Weeks International Festival from 23 May to 27 June. This long standing tradition has become one of the most important and eagerly awaited musical events in the country, featuring music, opera and ballet performances. A member of the European Festivals Association, Sofia Music Weeks showcases the best of Bulgarian music as well as top tier musicians from around Europe.
The list of performers reads like a “who’s who” of the Bulgarian music scene, with appearances by at least fourteen different orchestras, ensembles, and choirs. Over fifty singers and soloists will be showcased. A cycle for young musicians provides an excellent forum for young to demonstrate their talent onstage.
This year the festival includes several premiere performances, special collaborations, and commemorative events. Significant anniversaries to be commemorated include the 300th anniversary of the birth of the Italian composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, the 200th anniversary of composers Robert Schumann and Frederick Chopin, and the 150th anniversary of composer Gustav Mahler.
In addition to the concert program, the festival sponsors ancillary events such as round table discussions, photographic exhibitions, film screenings, and master classes for young musicians and singers.
Sofia Music Weeks is organized by the Sofia Municipality, the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture, and the National Palace of Culture.
