Foreigners want to be extra careful driving, since it is often difficult to find help when travel plans are interrupted by the unexpected breakdown in the middle of nowhere or flat tire in busy rush hour traffic. A good start is for drivers to be aware of state safety requirements for motor vehicles. In addition to inspections and insurance, all cars must carry emergency equipment for use in the event of any incident on the road.
The following items are required to be in cars at all times:
Reserve tire (ready for use)
Jack
Tool Kit
Reflective Triangle
Reflective Vest
Reserve Light Bulbs (for headlamps)
Tow rope
Fire Extinguisher (Class B or C)
First Aid Kit
The requirement for reflective vests is new this year. If you have been driving your car longer, please be sure to check if there is one in the car already. If not, be sure to add it to your emergency “kit.”
Also, please be aware that Bulgarian police can stop you at any time and ask to inspect your car. You may also be inspected when stopped for other infractions such as speeding, talking on a mobile phone, or driving without a seatbelt.
Please do yourself a favor and check your equipment now, and avoid piling up infractions in the future!
